Mary Alice Kinequon

August 1, 1917 – March 6, 2019

Mary Alice Kinequon (Fisher), (Pahpahtew Iyesiwisk "Spotted Bird") of Starblanket Cree Nation, was called home to the Creator at the age of 101. Born August 1, 1917 to Ben Okimow from Little Black Bear's Band and Small Door Fisher from Starblanket Cree Nation. Mary Alice was the granddaughter of Chief Starblanket.

Mary Alice had many relatives from Daystar, Starblanket, Piapot, Rocky Boy Montana and surrounding First Nation communities.

She loved to travel and her journeys led her to places throughout Saskatchewan, west to Vancouver B.C. south to Colorado, further south to Alberquerque New Mexico.

She is predeceased by her parents as well as Jack Fisher who raised Mary Alice as his own daughter; her husband Jack Kinequon; their sons George and Mervin Kinequon; daughter Olivena Moosemay (Kinequon); second husband Donald Bigknife; their son Jerry Bigknife; son-in-law John Moosemay; 4 grandsons and 1 great grandson.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Marlene Akapew (Kinequon) & William of Little Black Bear's Band, Anne Bellegarde (Bigknife)& Thomas of Peepeekisis First Nation, Mary Desnomie (Bigknife) & David of Peepeekisis First Nation, Alita Bigknife- LaRose of Starblanket Cree Nation; adopted daughter Mary Grey of Little Black Bear's Band; daughter-in-law Elsie Kinequon of Starblanket Cree Nation; special grandsons Ryan & David. Mary had 8 children, 22 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren, 60 great-great grandchildren & 3 great-great-great grandson.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge the doctors and nursing staff from St. Peter's Hospital, Melville SK, Balcarress Integrated Care Centre, File Hills Community Health Home Care Team, Balcarress EMS, All Nations Healing Hospital, Starbanket Cree Nation, Chief Michael & council, CHR Eunice Starr, File Hills Police Services, all the visitors, friends and family who made mom (Kucum) comfortable during her time at home.

Thank you Elders and Knowledge Keepers for the prayers and guidance that will help us through this time.

Thank you all for the kind words of comfort and heartfelt condolences.

Wake will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. the Wahpimoostoosis (White Calf) Gymnasium, Lebret SK. Funeral service will be held the following day, on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the same location. Interment to follow in the Starblanket Cree Nations Cemetery. As mom (Kucum) believed in our old ways, we kindly ask that no young children 12 years & under to be in attendance.
