Catherine Susan Engstrom
March 30, 1953 - May 10, 2022
Catherine Susan Engstrom was born in Wynyard Hospital on March 30, 1953 to Alvay and Ella Engstrom.
Cathy was diagnosed with epilepsy in June of 1954 and had a lot of health problems from an early age.
She went to Larissa School until 1962, when she moved to Moose Jaw, SK and went to Saskatchewan Training School. There she was active in sports and learned many useful life skills.
In 1973, Cathy moved to Saskatoon where she lived in a group home and started her career at Cosmopolitan Industries, where she worked for over 30 years. While in Saskatoon she participated in sports, namely bowling and track & field, and went on to compete in the Special Olympics where she won many awards that she was very proud of. She also attended Camp Easter Seal quite a few times and enjoyed it immensely. Cathy enjoyed being independent and could navigate the city on her own. One of her favourite things to do was to go out for coffee or to restaurants on pay day.
Cathy suffered a stroke in March of 2009 and moved to Parkridge Centre in Saskatoon until she was transferred to Golden Acres in Wynyard in 2010.
Cathy loved to talk and enjoyed a good visit with anyone and had a smile for everyone. Her sunny demeanor and quick wit made her a delight to be around. She had an incredible memory and could remember people and places by name that the rest of us had long forgotten. She loved the colour orange and her favourite flower was brown-eyed susans. Cathy loved a good game of Uno, Sorry, or Trouble and played countless games in her lifetime. She loved her family and was very happy when people came to visit. She made many friends throughout her years at Golden Acres and considered many of the staff there as special friends.
Cathy’s health started to decline in 2021, and she died surrounded by her loving family. She will be dearly missed.
Cathy was predeceased by her father Alvay, sister Donna and her grandparents.
She is survived by her loving mother Ella, brothers Doyle and Kelly (Debbie); nephews Shannon, Rana and Elijah; niece Astra and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
