Loretta Ann Favel (Lori)

September 13, 1963 – August 4, 2024

Lori was born in Lestock Saskatchewan on September 13 ,1963 to Irene Favel and Victor Kay. She was the 6th of 10 children and maintained a close bond with her siblings throughout her life. Lori was a loving daughter, sister, auntie and mother, but it was being a Kokum that brought her the most Joy. She was the best Kokum to Brody, Matthew and Bryson. Her grandchildren, including the children of her nieces and nephews, loved to be around her. She enjoyed spending time with little ones, singing songs, telling stories, teasing and laughing with them. She could tell children’s stories with so much enthusiasm and excitement, drawing them in with sound effects and tone. They would be on the edge of their seats, giggling and asking, “again kokum”. She affectionately earned the nickname, “kokum zombie”, as she would gladly join in the kid’s games. Lori strongly believed in providing safe and nurturing environments for the young ones. As a residential school survivor, she wanted to break cycles and give kids the chance to be kids with happy childhood memories.

Those who knew Lori, know that she loved to laugh and tease, dance and sing, and enjoyed a good debate about politics, sports, history and life. She liked cooking, often experimenting with new recipes that she never wrote down, many of which became one hit wonders. In the last year, as her illness grew more pronounced and limited what she was able to do, she could still be found in the kitchen, in the middle of the night, making fry bread and humming to herself. She enjoyed a good game of cards, a night (or two) at Bingo and time spent with family. She was a very kind, generous and accepting person who was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in.

Loretta was called home on August 4, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 60 yrs. She leaves behind to mourn, her daughter Janis (David) and her three grandsons, Brody, Matthew and Bryson. She is survived by her siblings, May, Gordon, Kathy, Doris, and Jenneen (Tommy) numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives.
