Russell Stuart Flavel

June 17, 1939 - June 25, 2026

Russell Stuart Flavel passed away peacefully just days after his 87th birthday with family by his side. Russell was raised in the Stoneycroft District, west of Bulyea. He and his five brothers, Alan, Brian, Mervan, Keith and Dale caused a little havoc growing up on Stan and Maidie’s family farm. Russell loved his animals, especially his horse, Tiny, and was involved in 4-H beef throughout his youth.

Russell met his future wife, Noreen Slough, at Sprayville School (Gibbs) and they dated several years before being married in July of 1963. Russell purchased six quarters of land before they married and started the mixed family farm near Silton which he continued to work for over 60 years until a few years ago when his health brought about his retirement. They raised three children, Scott, Lois and Nancy. He was a wonderful family man who enjoyed everything his children were involved in, as well his love for his grandchildren and joy of being a great-grandpa.

Russell was an avid volunteer within his community. He was involved with Eastshore 4-H Club, Silton Co-op Board, Silton Wheat Pool Delegate, Silton Snowplow Club, the Wecan Credit Union Board, and a Councilor for the R. M. of McKillop.

His love of curling was short-lived due to his rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis in his early 30’s. The coffee pot was always on at the farm, and if it rained the kitchen table was surrounded by friends and neighbours.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Noreen, as well as his three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; Scott Flavel (Karen), Cassidy (Alex), Whitney (Kyler); Lois Herridge (Brad d. 2018), Brittney Schiissler (Kevin), Brooks and Rylee, Kaitlin Benko (Derek) and Max; Nancy Johns (Jason), Isaac Gray, Adrien and Ava, Nathan Gray, and Ben Johns.

Please join us for Russell’s Celebration of Life on Thursday, July 2nd at 2:00 p.m. upstairs in the Strasbourg Memorial Hall at 113 Pearson St. The family would love to visit with everyone at lunch downstairs following the celebration.
