Thomas Russell Travis
May 28, 1921 - June 2, 2024
Thomas Russell Travis, aged 103, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Last Mountain Pioneer Home in Strasbourg, SK on Sunday, June 2, 2024. He leaves behind his loving partner of many years, Dorothy Welch (nee Tucker); her son John and his wife Tammy Welch (nee Miller) and their sons Ty and Connor; her daughter Robin (nee Welch) and her husband Tom Foster and their children Sean, Sarah, Samantha and Sophia; his nephew Rob Travis and his wife Trisha (nee Lee) and their sons Jesse and Zaven; Dorothy's niece Angela Burgess (nee Tucker) and her husband Ken Burgess; his cousin Ina Hill and her children Heather, Peter, Colleen, Garret, Greg and their families; and many family and friends.
Thomas (Tom) was born on May 28, 1921, near Govan, SK. He attended Ash Leaf school and at the age of 16 years, he left home to work for Alfred and Pearl Watson who lived only a couple miles down the road. This was where he called 'home' until his passing. Over the years Tom contributed a great deal in establishing the purebred Hereford herd on Alf and Pearl's farm as their herdsman. Alf and Tom attended many cattle shows throughout Saskatchewan and abroad. Due to the dedication and hard work that was put into breeding purebred Hereford cattle, their bulls were sought after throughout the cattle industry and sold in places as far away as Chili, Japan, and Bulgaria. In 1973, Alf and Pearl moved to Regina and Tom stayed on the farm. It was during that time that Dorothy and her family moved to the farm. Tom quickly became part of the family as he and Dorothy became best friends and life partners. As a result, he helped to raise her two children, John and Robin. As a man of enormous knowledge and work ethic, he passed all that he knew onto John as they continued to run the farm as partners. As he got older, his family grew and he lovingly became the proud 'Papa' of six wonderful grandchildren.
Tom will always be known as a hard worker and strong man, but he was also a very gentle and caring man. Whether he was working with cattle as the 'cow whisperer', laughing with his family and friends, or making his grandchildren smile, Tom was greatly loved.
His memory will always be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
Family and friends of Tom's are respectfully invited to attend his memorial service at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Govan, SK on Monday, June 17, 2024, at 10:00 am. A graveside service will be held immediately after at the Govan Cemetary with a luncheon to follow.
Our family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support during this difficult time. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
Arrangements entrusted to Conley Funeral Home Raymore, SK.
