Vera Houston Obituary

Vera Marie Houston

February 20, 1939 - January 20, 2026

Vera Marie Houston passed away at Sunnyside Adventist Care Centre on January 20, 2026. She was born in the family home at Bulyea, Saskatchewan on February 20, 1939. She grew up on the farm and did her share of the chores. She went to a country school which taught Grades 1 to 8 with one teacher. The school was just across the road from the farm so she was able to go home for lunch. She took her high school years at Strasbourg High School. Then she went to college and began her teaching career. She taught school for 3 years, then got married and had a family. She stayed home and was a homemaker for 23 years. Her marriage didn't work out, so she went back to work and finished her career at the Royal Bank. She retired in 2001.

Early in her retirement she purchased a condo with her partner, Ed Lesyshyn, where they enjoyed their time helping and supporting each other. They did a lot of travelling, mostly by bus tours. They went to places like Arizona, California, British Columbia, Branson, Alaska and the Amish Country. They also enjoyed a train trip to Toronto and saw the Blue Jays play. They had a hot air balloon ride and a cruise through the Panama Canal. Vera suffered from Parkinson's disease and in her later years Ed was unable to care for her so she lived at Sunnyside nursing home.

She was blessed with 3 children: son Raymond (Tracey), grandson Matthew Gillard-Machan (Heather, great grandchild Lauren) and grandson Erik (Grace Hof); daughter Noreen, granddaughter Danica Ledwith (Brandon, great grandchild Aidan), granddaughter Alanna Litzenberger and grandson Cole Litzenberger (Kellie Onda-Inglis); and son Brent (Liza), granddaughter Cierrah (Kaelen Brown) and grandson Tanner.

Vera liked the simple things in life. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, playing cards and games, camping (feeding the squirrels and listening to the birds sing), going for walks and square dancing.

She was predeceased by her father (Herman Yung), mother (Theresa Yung), sister (Eileen Lissinna), brother (Edwin Yung) and great granddaughter (Brooke Ledwith). She will be missed by her family and everyone who knew her.

A Celebration of Veras Life will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 1 pm at St. John Lutheran Church in Strasbourg, Sask.
