Wilma Anderson Obituary

Wilma Therese Anderson

November 29, 2023

It is with great sadness that my sister Della (spouse Dave), and I announce the passing of our dear mother Wilma Therese Anderson (nee Nash) to the realm of the Divine. She was in her 97th year of life. Our mother was predeceased by our father John Leslie Anderson (who died in his 67th year of his life) in 1989, a marriage of 36 years. Her legacy will continue through the lives of her three grandchildren: Lerissa, Devin (spouse Megan) and Jeremy (spouse Chaylah), and her great grandchildren: Andrew and Benjamin and perhaps other beautiful souls yet to be born.

Our mother was the middle child of a large family of sisters. Her father John Nash and mother Della Nash (nee Burnette) both came from the area of Ottawa Ontario. They moved to Saskatchewan and settled in the farming community of Valley Centre (Sec. 31, Tp. 32, R 13, West of the 3rd) where our mother was born. Wilma was predeceased by her mother and father and seven sisters and their husbands: Olive Palmer (her brother-in-law Francis), Veronica Massie (her brother-in-law Lawrence), Bernadette Russell (her brother-in-law Jack), Levina Darragh (her brother-in-law Earl), Eva Russell (her brother-in-law Ken), Leila Oesch (her brother-in-law Ed), Francis Kerr (her brother-in-law Ron). Wilma was an aunt to 3 children on my father’s side of the family , Alexander & Violet Anderson’s children: David Anderson, Mary Bickert (nee Anderson) , and Janet Anderson. On our mother’s side of the family, she was an Aunt to 11 nieces and nephews: Vina Edwards (nee Palmer), Ron Massie, Carol D'Aust (nee Massie), Kathy Morgan (nee Russell), Earl Russell, Pat Darragh, Steven Darragh, Perry Russell, Sharon Faye (nee Oesch), Curt Oesch, Sandra Oesch. We will not name all of Wilma’s grand nieces and nephews, 29 in total, and great nieces and nephews—increasing to over 33 at our present count; but we privately acknowledge their precious lives and the lives of their fine children.

Our mother was a child born into the Depression Era, that instilled in her the value of fruitful work and family closeness. She was masterful in her sewing, cooking, styling of hair, gardening, and all the many tasks a mother does for her children. She was always engaging, enjoyed playing cards with her extended family and her Irish wit was always in evidence in both her casual interactions and many deeper conversations. She enjoyed a warm relationship with all her sisters and brothers-in-laws, and they and our cousins all became valued parts of our lives. She also loved and appreciated her only sister-in-law Vi. As a family we enjoyed seeing Aunty Vi and our wonderful Uncle Alex, and our Anderson cousins, when they visited us on the farm and when we travelled to visit them in Edmonton. Our mother made our extended family a valued and appreciated part of our lives.

In the last 10 years mother slipped slowly into dementia, as memory diminishes, the fading glimmers of family stories were repeated. We took her to our local hospital on October 28, where she remained in palliative care. Her independent sprit remained undaunted as she climbed out of her hospital bed and walked into hallway, but then fell and broke her hip. At that point her demise was hastened as she was bed-bound and was treated with the necessary administration of opiates to lessen her pain. Her noble life of sacrifice and love ended November 29, at 1:27 PM.

Her loving devotion to Della and I was unmatched and her absence from our lives will greatly be missed. Now in the loving embrace of Eternity she has departed, but never to be forgotten. We will always love you mom!

A private family service will be held at a later date.
